How To Run A RAM Memory TestOK, lets say you just upgraded your computer from PC2100 DDR SDRAM at 512MB and your computer manual said that you could also use PC3200 DDR ram, so you installed 2GB. What now? When you are doing a computer ram upgrade, afterwards, you're going to have to run a ram memory test such as memtest. If you type MemTest into Google, it will quickly let you download the program hcidesign.com/memtest/ It's a free program, and you should only download it from reputable sources to ensure that it doesn't have an embedded virus inside it. Download MemTest.zip to your hard drive, and unpack the ZIP archive (I use WinZip. You can download it anywhere. Windows XP will call it a archived folder, and will let you unpack it, also.)
Double-click the MemTest.exe file. You'll have to shut down all running programs, click OK and then click 'Start Testing'. It will run for about 20 minutes, so go do something while it's working. It will rigorously test your memory. It will go through many different kinds of tests that, over the years, have been shown to reveal weak bits in memory chips. It's sort of like exercising the memory chips. A ram memory test is designed to give a full workout of pushups and squat thrusts to your memory. If there are any weak bits in the chips, it will reveal them. What a windows memory diagnostic does is it goes through every part of all the RAM you have installed in your computer. It will halt programs which are running for microseconds and it will then successively write-to-and-then-read-back numbers all the way from 0 to the highest bit number that depends upon how many bits the memory has. It will then try things like writing 1010101010 then 010101010 back and forth, this tires the chip, you might say, if it's weak. It also does a shift register operation on the memory, passing a 1 through the bits like this: 10000000 There are many other tests that can be done. For example, passing a 0 through ones using the same method. 01111111 etc. After it has written, then read, written, then read, millions of times and every time there was no error, then it will tell you the results and you'll know whether you should send back the memory, or not. Actually, only if you replaced all the RAM in your system, would this test show that it's that particular chip. A good quality ram memory test will be able to say, in particular, that that's the RAM which is bad. Sometimes the manufacturer will give you a memory test program. It will be able to even show you the sockets and tell you which one is bad. RAM, if you install it and don't do a memory test on it, can do strange things. Problems might not show up for a while. Or, the problems might be sporadic, having to do with things like the temperature inside the case, or the temperature of the room. If program start, then crash, you might have a RAM problem. If one time the program runs and it doesn't crash, then another time it does, then it might be a RAM problem. If your computer hangs in the middle of booting, it could be RAM. If the next time it boots fine, the a program hangs, those are all symptoms. It might be just one memory location that's bad. If one bit inside the memory is stuck to a 1, for example, then very strange things might occur. They would seem to be random things. If that memory were being used to display a JPEG image, who cares? You'd see no difference. If that memory bit were part of the code of a program, it's possible that you might not use the feature of the program (at that moment) that even uses that bit. However, if that bit is run, then absolutely unknown things might occur. The moral of the story is, run a ram memory test. |

Kingston HyperX RAM Modules
By Jeffrey Frasco
Kingston HyperX RAM modules are on top of their game-and a whole lot more. Plus, if it's coming from Kingston, I'm rest very-assured that I've got a good product (unless it happens to be one of those notorious Kingston counterfeits-which I had the distasteful experience of buying a "Kingston DDR2 2 gigabyte modules", only to find out that they were phonies and would not even set-up right in BIOS!). Ok, venting aside, let's take a glance at my friends system, its HyperX modules, and various other offerings from Kingston.

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is what the computer uses to run programs and applications. Your computer needs RAM to boot, run your operating system and open web pages online. Low computer RAM, or Random Access Memory, is not a healthy condition for your computer. If you do not have enough RAM to load your open applications, you will have a very slow PC that will not be able to run your applications properly.
