What Is PC2100 DDR SDRAM?

There are as many kinds of RAM, now, as there are computers. Many times it can get very confusing as to which you need to buy that will fit into your computer.

The best thing to do is not do lots of research on exactly what makes the differences between these RAM chips, because that doesn't really matter. You don't need to know what the advantage of Parity is, for example, to install a RAM board in your laptop.

PC2100 DDR SDRAM just means that it goes into a computer that's fast enough to take PC2100 boards and it takes the kind of board called a DDR SDRAM. Therefore, you buy one of those. The number of pins is also important. DDR ram memory

Do you really need to know what these letters stand for? Well, SDRAM means "Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory" and DDR stands for "Double Data Rate". There, now you know. Did it help you figure out which memory you needed? Nope. The reason is because there's PC2100 DDR ram and PC3200 DDR ram and PC2100 DDR2 and they will all go in different computers.

Most memory manufacturers, like Kingston, have javascript engines which let you figure out which memory board your particular model number computer takes. Just because you have a Dell does not mean it takes a certain kind of RAM, and that's it. Every model takes different types of RAM, and has different limits as to the total amount of RAM that the computer can take. PC2100 DDR SDRAM is a very common SDRAM, but that doesn't necessarily mean that yours will take it.

There's DDR (DDR1) and DDR2. DDR2 means double-data-rate two memory. There is an enormous difference between the two. For one, they both take different voltages. One takes 1.8 Volts and the DDR1 was 2.5 Volts. Certainly that would blow a DDR2 (if you could plug it in to the socket, that is). In order to not make that happen, the manufacturers decided to create different socket, so it won't plug in to the older one.

Speeds at which they run are also different. The DDR is 200 Mhz, and the DDR2 is 400 Mhz (Megahertz).

Why these differences? Well, new is better and faster. AS computers got faster, they needed to do more and needed to run faster. A third difference between the two is called 'write latency'. This allows for data to be written to the memory one tick of the clock past the write command has been sent. With the DDR2, it becomes two clocks instead of just one. It was a trick, it allowed the DDR2 to be able to write twice the data to the memory.

What it means to you, though, is headaches when you're wishing to just install some memory onto your computer. If you were to purchase a PC2100 DDR SDRAM it probably wouldn't work on your computer. This is a quite old RAM, now-a-days.

DDR2 has many advantages over the older DDR1. First, the required voltage is lower, which reduces the amount of power your computer uses. Second, the increased pre-fetch increases the core speed dependency. Third, DDR2 allows you to migrate towards higher frequency bus speeds, which makes things go faster.

Another thing you need to know is the number after the designation. If it says DDR2-533, then 533 is a frequency. Your computer might not be able to take that speed. There is also DDR2-400. Oh, by the way, after you have installed you memory, run a ram memory test to make sure it is all working properly.

So, do you know a bit more about PC2100 DDR SDRAM, now?

Kingston HyperX RAM Modules

By Jeffrey Frasco
Kingston HyperX RAM modules are on top of their game-and a whole lot more. Plus, if it's coming from Kingston, I'm rest very-assured that I've got a good product (unless it happens to be one of those notorious Kingston counterfeits-which I had the distasteful experience of buying a "Kingston DDR2 2 gigabyte modules", only to find out that they were phonies and would not even set-up right in BIOS!). Ok, venting aside, let's take a glance at my friends system, its HyperX modules, and various other offerings from Kingston.

Slow PC - Danger Sign of Low Computer RAM

By Jeffrey Frasco
RAM, or Random Access Memory, is what the computer uses to run programs and applications. Your computer needs RAM to boot, run your operating system and open web pages online. Low computer RAM, or Random Access Memory, is not a healthy condition for your computer. If you do not have enough RAM to load your open applications, you will have a very slow PC that will not be able to run your applications properly.
