How To Upgrade RAM

So, you've decided that you need to do a RAM upgrade. Your computer is from the year 2000, you have an old Dell Dimension, and you want to upgrade, where do you go from there? Well, you need to know how to upgrade ram.

First, you'll have to determine what the upper limit of RAM can be for your computer. Look up your particular computer, lets say it needs hp compaq ram, and find out what that particular computer's RAM needs are. Some have a limit of 2 GB, some older computers can only be expanded up to 512 MB. Make sure that your comuter, or laptop ram memory isn't already at the maximum it can go. Some computers already have all the RAM they could ever have in them.

To do a laptop ram upgrade, you'll also need to know how to upgrade ram. In that case, it might take DDR DDR2 ram, either one. DDR (sometimes called DDR1) is only 200 Mhz, whereas DDR2 can go 400 Mhz. DDR2 is better, runs at a lower 1.8 Volts, instead of 2.5, and can access memory better.

After you have installed the memory, run a ram memory test using a free MemTest.exe which is available on the internet. If you type MemTest into Google, it will quickly let you download the program hcidesign.com/memtest

It's a free program, and you should only download it from reputable sources to ensure that it doesn't have an embedded virus inside it. Download MemTest.zip to your hard drive, and unpack the ZIP archive (I use WinZip. You can download it anywhere. Windows XP will call it a archived folder, and will let you unpack it, also.)

Double-click the MemTest.exe file. You'll have to shut down all running programs, click OK and then click 'Start Testing'. It will run for about 20 minutes, so go do something while it's working. It will rigorously test your memory. It will go through many different kinds of tests that, over the years, have been shown to reveal weak bits in memory chips. It's sort of like exercising the memory chips. A ram memory test is designed to give a full workout of pushups and squat thrusts to your memory. If there are any weak bits in the chips, it will reveal them.

Now you need to know how to upgrade ram. If you have a desktop computer, you'll  have to open the case. That can be a problem all by itself. Once you've got the case off, hopefully you've researched on the internet for your particular model number and you have photos of the inside of your computer. Check, also, your instruction manual. All manuals can be downloaded from the internet if you can't find yours. It probably only came with a CD version of the manual, anyways.

DDR RAM generally has 2 - 4 sockets on the motherboard. They tend to be black, and generally point at a 90 degree angle to the motherboard. There are two (usually gray) levers on both sides of the socket. As you press the RAM into the socket, the levers should move off to the sides. As you press it into the socket, they'll click. Push the levers tight against the sides to seat it.

Problems that can arise: the chip might not even be in the socket. Use a flashlight to see if you're in the right holes. There are little stops that are inside the socket which keep wrong boards from plugging into the socket. Check that they match up. Try turning the board around if it doesn't go in that way; and there you go. You have just installed your RAM into your computer. Congratulations. You just learned how to upgrade ram.

Kingston HyperX RAM Modules

By Jeffrey Frasco
Kingston HyperX RAM modules are on top of their game-and a whole lot more. Plus, if it's coming from Kingston, I'm rest very-assured that I've got a good product (unless it happens to be one of those notorious Kingston counterfeits-which I had the distasteful experience of buying a "Kingston DDR2 2 gigabyte modules", only to find out that they were phonies and would not even set-up right in BIOS!). Ok, venting aside, let's take a glance at my friends system, its HyperX modules, and various other offerings from Kingston.

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is what the computer uses to run programs and applications. Your computer needs RAM to boot, run your operating system and open web pages online. Low computer RAM, or Random Access Memory, is not a healthy condition for your computer. Dodge Ram Accessories add to the style and function of the Dodge Ram truck series. These models of trucks have been popular for their stylish looks for many years; however, many truck owners enjoy fixing up their truck to look different than most others on the road. Some owners simply enjoy making the truck "their own." Many people do not realize all of the options available to spruce up or "pimp" trucks.
